We watch about 1.1 million live used-car listings a day across 73 regions, and the pattern I keep seeing in the EV slice of that inventory is buyers pricing electric cars with a gas-car brain. It shows in the deal-flagging system, too — we catch roughly 12,823 underpriced listings a day by comparing a car against its regional cohort, and every so often an EV gets flagged as a steal that, on closer look, isn't one. The mileage and age check out. The thing nobody priced in is the battery.
Gas cars have a hundred years of shared intuition behind them. Everyone roughly knows what 120,000 km does to an engine, what a timing belt interval means, what "one owner, dealer serviced" is worth. None of that intuition transfers to a used EV, and the gap between what buyers assume and what's actually true is where the money gets lost.
Mistake one: pricing it off mileage and age, like it's a Corolla
This is the default failure mode, because it's the default mental model for every used car. A buyer sees a five-year-old EV with 60,000 km, compares it to a five-year-old gas car with 60,000 km, and expects a similar depreciation curve. Reasonable instinct, wrong car.
An engine at 60,000 km is barely past its break-in period. A battery pack at five years and 60,000 km could be anywhere from 95% of original capacity to 75%, depending entirely on how it was charged — daily DC fast-charging to 100%, parked at full charge in Gulf-summer heat, run down to zero repeatedly. Two identical-on-paper EVs can have genuinely different cars underneath the same spec sheet.
The wreckage: buyers pay gas-car-curve money for a car whose real range is 30–40% below what the window sticker promised, and they don't find out until the first road trip, months after the return window and the seller's goodwill have both closed.
Mistake two: trusting the range number on the listing
The EPA or WLTP range figure printed on a used listing is the range that trim had on day one, tested in mild conditions, on a battery that hadn't aged a single cycle. It is not a spec of the car in front of you — it's a spec of a car that no longer exists. Cold weather alone can cut real-world range 20–30% temporarily; battery aging cuts it permanently, and the two stack.
I've seen buyers negotiate hard over a $500 difference in asking price and then get blindsided by a real range that's 50 miles short of what they budgeted their commute around. That's not a paperwork problem. That's a car that no longer does the job they bought it for, and there's no fixing it short of a new pack.
If a used EV listing's only range figure is the factory rating, treat it the way you'd treat a ten-year-old odometer reading with a "possibly rolled back" sticker on it — a starting point for questions, not an answer.
Mistake three: skipping the one inspection that actually matters
Buyers who are otherwise careful — the type who get a mechanic to check compression and look for frame damage on a gas car — routinely skip the EV equivalent entirely and settle for a cosmetic once-over and a test drive around the block. A quiet motor and a full-looking battery gauge tell you almost nothing about pack health.
The right EV pre-purchase check is a State of Health (SOH) reading, either pulled by the dealer's diagnostic tool, requested from the manufacturer's app history, or run independently through a scan service. It's a single number — percentage of original capacity remaining — and it is the closest thing EVs have to a compression test. Ask for DC fast-charging history too, if the platform tracks it; a car fast-charged twice a week for four years has lived a harder life than one that mostly charged overnight at home, even at identical mileage.

What the right way actually looks like
None of this means used EVs are a bad buy — plenty are excellent value precisely because sellers and buyers alike still price them like gas cars, which cuts both ways. A well-maintained EV with a verified 92% SOH and a mostly-home-charging history is arguably a better bet than an equivalent-mileage gas car with an unknown service record, because the drivetrain has almost nothing to wear out.
The difference is what you ask for before you hand over money. Don't anchor on mileage and age alone. Don't take the range figure at face value. And don't let a clean test drive substitute for a battery health number. Ask for the SOH reading the same way you'd ask for a compression test or a pre-purchase inspection on a gas car — because for an EV, that number is the engine.
